Animal Welfare
All our pork without exception is 100% British. This means born and reared on Farms in the South of England. We are happy to pay a premium to our suppliers over and above the price of buying pork from European suppliers because we have a personal belief in supporting our own agricultural community, and furthermore an active interest in the welfare standards of our animals - we also know that our customers see this as important.
Our pigs are fed on grain that is GM free and grown on UK farms - to rear a tonne of pork takes 2.1 tonnes of cereal. The growth of Westaways over the last two years alone has increased our usage of grain by nearly 4000 tonnes a year. The Home Grown Cereals Association recognised this by awarding Westaways an Enterprise award in 2001 and again in 2007.
We visit farms that supply our pigs. This unit has an "open barn door policy" which allows sows to forage in the fields, or come inside into the barns.
